After the hyper-productivity and adrenaline peak of December, the beginning of the new year opens up space for rest and silence, allowing us to turn toward self-care, suppressed priorities, and the meanings of our own lives, as well as their connection to the world around us. This is not a period of inactivity or stagnation, nor a withdrawal from the world, but rather a different and more responsible way of inhabiting it—a period of slowness, a state in which time ceases to be a managed resource and becomes an experience to be lived. A period of gentle intensities and a more stable presence within the body and space.

The photographic series Slowing Down by Sanja Merćep is marked by a conscious calming of both gaze and time, aligning itself with the idea of so-called ‘slow practices,’ which emphasize analyticity, awareness, and consistency. In an artistic context, slow practices highlight a mindful presence within the process, rejecting the pressures of constant productivity and efficiency.
