MARIO LALICH PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Location: Gallery of Fine Arts (Ulica Kralja Tomislava 15)
Dates: July 14 – August 30, 2026
Three years after the untimely passing of Mario Lalich (Split, 1965 – Tučepi, 2023), the Gallery of Fine Arts is presenting a comprehensive retrospective exhibition dedicated to this internationally acclaimed photographer. Lalich established his career in the United States, where he lived and worked between New York and Portland from 1987 to 2003. He became renowned for his meticulously staged, highly aesthetic photographs featuring bizarre, surreal, provocative, enigmatic, and allegorical subjects. His work is distinguished by its unmistakable visual identity, particularly in its exploration of absurdity. Lalich also earned recognition as an accomplished portrait photographer, capturing models, musicians, and figures from the film industry. Throughout his career, he received numerous photography awards and honors, while his work appeared in prestigious American publications including The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, and Cartier.
After returning to his native region, free from commercial pressures, Lalich devoted himself to photographing scenes from his immediate surroundings and the broader landscape of Dalmatia. His final exhibition, The Secret Life of Abandoned Walls, held at Zagreb's Josip Račić Gallery in 2021, attracted significant media attention.
Thanks to the generosity of Mario Lalich's family, the Gallery of Fine Arts exhibition will feature approximately 110 works created between the late 1980s and 2021. As part of the exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity to watch Lalich's 1999 short film Davenport.
