Ultra Europe: Ten Tips for Safe Fun

Ultra Europe: Ten Tips for Safe Fun

I suppose that all those who are attending Ultra Europe Festival next week already have their show tickets. Plane, bus or ferry tickets to Split had been probably booked, and accommodation secured. All you need to do now is to wait for this big electronic music festival to start.

When dozens of thousands people flood any city, all of them rushing to have fun, many things can go wrong. Is there a way to enjoy, and yet avoid risks or at least make consequences bearable? Yes there, is here are some important tips and guidelines how to spend your time out of the Poljud Stadium safely.

1. There is one thing you simply must know - emergency phone number. In Croatia it is 112, and it will connect you to police, ambulance, fire brigade, even the Mountain Rescue Service. Operators on 112 are just like anywhere else, trained and skilled to provide any help you might need. Don't abuse that, don't call them if you need to find a place to drink or for some other silly reason like that.

2. There are two hospitals in Split, and each one of them has an emergency room. You can find both Firule and Križine hospitals on this map. If you want to go there by taxi, it's enough to say "take me to the hospital"; everyone will know where to take you. If you need some medicine you can buy, like painkillers, there are lot of pharmacies, here are addresses and contacts for some of them, including two opened 24/7

3. If for any reason you are not able to call 112, and you need police assistance, you can go to some of stations by yourself. Find them on this map.

4. On the occasion like this, many people need consular or diplomatic assistance. There are 14 consulates in Split, mostly honorary, but you can use their services, or try to reach diplomatic and consular offices in Zagreb and other towns. Full list of all embassies and consulates is available on Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site. All the consulates which are working in Split are available on this map.

5. To go around town, walking is the easiest way. Split is small enough to have crucial spots on a walking distance between them. If you need a local bus, here's the lines map. Fare for a single drive within city boundaries is 11 Kuna. Since most of the people will have the Poljud Stadium as their main destination and you will need buses 7 and 17. City announced additional buses on these lines. For taxi, you can get them on taxi stations in the city centre, or call them on +385 (0)21 1777. Since recently, Uber is also available. You rather don't hitch hike, or accept offers for a ride to or from stadium from people you don't know, or who don't have their licenses displayed.

6. There are many beaches in Split, and many like to hang out there before or after the party. Sometimes beaches turn into ad hoc party sites. However, be careful because combination of sea, burning sun, lack of sleep and alcohol can be really dangerous. Better stay safe than to need tips 1 and 2. Also, try not to leave your things unattended, or at least avoid to flash your gadgets around. Usually, it's good to leave one of the people by the things when you go swimming. Another option is to ask someone next to your towel or a sunbed to keep an eye, and do it in return when they decide to cool out in the sea. Some beaches, like Bačvice, have lockers for valuable things.

7. When you are buying something, or pay for some service, ask for a bill. They have to issue you the one, and it need to be computer generated. That's the easiest way to avoid being ripped off, although not completely.

8. Clubs and bars will gladly welcome you, and you will have a good time there, but - again - be careful. Always, but really always check the price list before ordering, or upon your arrival to a venue. Same goes with the restaurants. If some price doesn't exist on a price list, you can't be charged for it.

9. Watch out what you are offered, and watch from whom you are taking something that's been offered. In such a big crowd there will be all kind of temptations, but don't let your entertainment to be irretrievably ruined.

10. Last, but not least; respect your hosts. In the closest vicinity of apartments, hotels, rooms and hostels where you are staying there are people who need to go to work next morning, who have small children, who might be sick, or just want some peace in their homes. Be friends with your temporary neighbours in Split, and let's enjoy together in Ultra Europe!
