Location: Kino klub Split, Dom mladih Split (Ulica slobode 28)

Time: 18 April 2026, at 8:00 p.m.

On Saturday, 18 April, starting at 8 p.m., a screening of Horror Vacui (2023) by Boris Poljak will take place at the premises of Kino klub Split (Dom mladih, Ulica slobode 28), followed by a guest appearance by the author. The post-screening discussion with Boris Poljak will be led by club member Roman Roudi.

Horror vacui literally means “fear of empty space” or fear of the void. The term was first used by Aristotle, and in this context it serves as a metaphor for the fear of an uncertain future, which produces feelings of anxiety and loneliness. Through long, associatively connected sequence shots, the film draws attention to the ongoing militarization of the world. There are no fixed indicators of when or where events take place—everything can happen anywhere, at any time.

Boris Poljak (Split, 1959) is one of the most prominent Croatian experimental and documentary filmmakers, an acclaimed cinematographer and director of photography. He has been a long-time member of Kino klub Split and one of the initiators of the Split Film Festival – an international festival of new film and video. Since 1989, he has worked as a professional director of photography. He has shot more than 50 short and feature films and has received eight national awards for best cinematography. He has directed award-winning experimental films such as Onkraj (2003) and Sky Spirits (2010), both co-directed with Damir Čučić, as well as three short documentary experimental films: Splitski akvarel (2009), They Just Come and Go (2017), and Autofocus (2013). The latter won awards for Best Short Film at international film festivals in Karlovy Vary, Visions du Réel, and Nyon in Switzerland.
