The Traditional Advent Concert by GMD Sanctus Domnio will take place on December 20, 2024, at 7 PM, following the Holy Mass at the Cathedral of St. Domnius.

Performers:

Mandolin Orchestra Anđeli Svirači

Formed as a preparatory “junior” mandolin orchestra for Sanctus Domnio, it works alongside the mandolin and guitar school to train younger generations of mandolin and guitar players for technically more demanding pieces performed by the “senior” orchestra. The orchestra began its work in 1995 and has been known as Anđeli Svirači since 2004. In 2005, leadership was taken over by Professor Tonka Juranović Matulić, a long-time member of Sanctus Domnio, who led the orchestra diligently for eleven years, winning numerous awards. In 2016, Professor Ivana Kenk Kalebić, the first graduate mandolinist in the Republic of Croatia and a mandolin professor at the Josip Hatze Primary and Secondary Music School, assumed leadership. Since 2021, the orchestra has been conducted by Ana Mlačić, a member of the Sanctus Domnio orchestra and the Libertas Quintet, as well as a music pedagogy student at the Academy of Arts in Split.

Mandolin Quartet UMAS

The quartet consists of students from the newly established Mandolin Studies program at the Academy of Arts in Split, mentored by Professor Stela Ivanišević Curić. Founded in 2022, the quartet performed Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins and Orchestra under the mentorship of Professor Ivana Kenk Kalebić, accompanied by the Sanctus Domnio orchestra. In 2023, the quartet represented the Split Academy in collaboration between UMAS and the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek at the Tambura Academica event, winning first prize in the chamber ensemble category at the Mandolina Imota festival. All quartet members are also regular members of GMD Sanctus Domnio.

Mandolin Orchestra Sanctus Domnio

Founded in 1990 under the leadership of music educator Marin Katunarić in Split, the orchestra has been conducted by Vladimir Lukas since 1991. The orchestra has performed numerous concerts both in Croatia and abroad (Italy, Vatican, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Spain, Montenegro, North Macedonia) and has received many domestic and international awards and recognitions. Its repertoire includes numerous pieces originally composed for mandolin ensembles as well as adaptations of works for other orchestras by both contemporary and classical composers.

Around the Sanctus Domnio orchestra, the “Split Mandolin Circle” emerged, comprising primarily Dalmatian and Split-based composers. Among other awards and recognitions, Sanctus Domnio received the City of Split Award in the field of culture in 2006 and, since 2015, has held the title of “Best Mandolin Orchestra in Europe” after winning the Giacomo Sartori competition of European mandolinists in Ala, Italy.
