On Monday, October 6 at 8 p.m., the Film Evenings program of the Split Photo Club continues with a free screening of the award-winning documentary Last Stop Coney Island: The Life and Photography of Harold Feinstein.

The film tells the story of the extraordinary life and work of American photographer Harold Feinstein (April 17, 1931 – June 20, 2015). A master of black-and-white street photography, Feinstein built his career over more than six decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 2015. After early success on the emerging New York photography scene—including the acquisition of his work by MoMA when he was just 19—Feinstein withdrew from public life and was almost forgotten.

A true artist with a unique and inspiring philosophy of life, Harold only began receiving the recognition he deserved towards the end of his life. This is where the film finds him, reconstructing his story through a diverse body of work, much of which had remained unseen until then. The rediscovery of Feinstein’s extensive and varied oeuvre came only in his final years, and the film encounters him then—in his early eighties, with an almost Zen-like gratitude for the life he had lived. Through the testimonies of friends, partners, family members, and critics, this atmospheric film creates an intimate yet candid portrait of a complex and inspiring 20th-century “underdog” in photography. Last Stop Coney Island tells the story of the man behind the photographs—a true original whose philosophy of life remains as fascinating today as it was in his prime.
