This month's edition of the international artist talk series Disku(r)sija will feature German theatre writer Judith Bethke, the current artist-in-residence of the KURS Association. The conversation will be moderated by literary translator Tanja Radmilo.

For the past nineteen years, the KURS Association has organized the Writers in Residence Marko Marulić programme, offering one-month residencies in Split to international artists—primarily writers, but also translators and visual artists. As part of the programme, resident artists are traditionally introduced to the local audience through literary talks and public conversations with Croatian authors, fostering international cultural exchange and dialogue.

Judith Bethke will introduce herself to the Split audience through a conversation entitled: "Can There Be Culture Without Discourse?"

Judith Bethke is a theatre writer from Hamburg. She developed her first original projects through numerous youth theatre programmes, as well as internships and assistantships at institutions such as Thalia Theater and Kampnagel. She spent a year in Zagreb, where she was first introduced to contemporary circus and puppet and object theatre—an experience that significantly shaped her artistic development. Since 2019, she has been studying Applied Theatre Studies in Gießen, while also furthering her education at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo and the FORUM TEXT playwriting programme in Graz.

Her artistic practice combines writing, performance, production, costume design, and sound, with a strong focus on socio-political themes. She works both independently and within various artistic collectives, and her work has been presented at venues including Frankfurt LAB, Kampnagel, and Reality TV, as well as through numerous public-space projects.

The Disku(r)sija programme is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Split, and the international network TRADUKI.
