The exhibition presents an overview of Petra Lovreković’s artistic research, in which the experience of place, architecture and landscape gradually transforms into an abstract visual language. From early landscapes and architectural structures, through her Sicilian project, to cycles in which grids and lines transform into roots, flowers and new organic forms, the artist creates a personal cartography of space, time and memory.

As curator Joško Belamarić points out in the catalogue text, Petra Lovreković’s paintings resemble the cities we remember from childhood – memories that are always incomplete and composed of layers that we gradually cover with new ones over the years. Yet each painting preserves a trace and a kind of evidence that the scene once existed. In her canvases, the city is no longer depicted literally, but is experienced through the temperature of colour, texture, materiality and light. The experience of Sicily holds a particularly important place: in the paintings, it does not appear merely as a recognisable geographical setting, but as the inner rhythm of a place – expressed through stone, architecture, vegetation and the intense Mediterranean light.

The body of work presented at the University Gallery was created in Sicily between 2022 and 2026. It began with extensive drawings made on the island and gradually developed through drawing and painting into four interconnected series:

IV. The Inverted Path
