THE OTHER MUSEUM: Thursdays at the Ethnographic Museum

THE OTHER MUSEUM: Thursdays at the Ethnographic Museum

Location: Ethnographic Museum (Iza Vestubula 4)

Date: November 6 - December 4, 2025, (Thursdays)

The Ethnographic Museum Split is launching a new program series called “DRUGI muzej” (THE OTHER MUSEUM), designed as a platform for dialogue between experts and the community on heritage and contemporary social issues. The program starts in November and will take place on Thursdays, featuring a variety of events—meetings, concerts, workshops, screenings—exploring the relationship between people, space, and culture.

On Thursday, November 6, as part of the new museum program, visitors can participate in a workshop of traditional Split dances with FA Jedinstvo starting at 7:00 PM, followed by a free concert by the mandolin orchestra Sanctus Domnio – Mandolina Spalatina at 8:00 PM.

The “DRUGI muzej” program opens up the museum as more than just a place for preserving heritage. It positions the museum as an active participant in the community, promoting dialogue, critical thinking, and collaboration among cultural, social, and scientific actors. The program aims to familiarize the wider public with themes shaping contemporary society and to promote museology, ethnology, and cultural anthropology as disciplines connecting the past and present.

The first cycle focuses on community, with future months addressing topics such as health, mythology, ecology, labor, the role of women in tradition and contemporary society, intangible heritage, and space. Participants include ethnologists, cultural anthropologists, artists, scientists, associations, and individuals working in the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

The first thematic cycle, COMMUNITY, features events highlighting best practices in cultural heritage preservation and showing how heritage thrives within communities—through initiatives that nurture traditional skills, strengthen local identity, and connect generations. November’s program includes:

Thursdays:

  • Nov 6, 7:00 PM: Workshop of traditional Split dances (FA Jedinstvo), and, at 8:00 PM: Concert by mandolin ensemble Sanctus Domnio
  • Nov 13, 6:00 PM: Presentation of KUD Pleter from Dugopolje and discussion with Marijana Botić Rogošić, leader of KUD and initiator of numerous heritage protection activities in Dalmatian Zagora
  • Nov 27, 6:00 PM: Presentation of the Pjover Association from Hvar and discussion with director Ivan Zaninović – Grandet, along with the screening of the film Kamena čipka našeg sela
  • Dec 4, 6:00 PM: Christmas creative workshop

“DRUGI muzej” aims to create a space for networking between the museum and various cultural and scientific stakeholders, as well as to promote individuals and initiatives contributing to the preservation and reinterpretation of cultural heritage. The program also seeks to support the development of Split’s year-round cultural offer, with a focus on engaging the local community and new audiences in museum activities.

The Ethnographic Museum Split invites all interested citizens and culture enthusiasts to join and become part of a shared exploration of how tradition, identity, and contemporary life can together shape a new, “other,” living museum.
