Exhibition “For Croatia Like a Tiger”

Exhibition “For Croatia Like a Tiger”

Location: Museum of the Homeland War Gallery in Split (Mike Tripala 6)

Time: May 5 – May 20, 2026

The exhibition “For Croatia Like a Tiger” presents the wartime journey of the 1st Guards Brigade of the Croatian Army, “Tigers.” It primarily consists of framed photographs with accompanying descriptions, owned by the Association of War Veterans and Members of the Guards Unit “Tigers.”

The exhibition begins with photographs from 1990, when the Special Units of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia, Rakitje, were established—the unit from which the 1st Guards Brigade of the Croatian Army was formed. It continues with photographs of members of the Tigers from battlefields across Croatia, from Vukovar to Dubrovnik. The photographs also feature Ante Gotovina, Damir Tomljanović Gavran, and the current Minister of Croatian Veterans, Tomo Medved. The exhibition also includes a photograph of President Franjo Tuđman with the Tigers in Hrvatska Kostajnica, as well as a photograph of Cardinal Franjo Kuharić with the Tigers during his visit to the Novska battlefield.

The exhibition also includes several photographs of the “Tigresses” — female members of the 1st Guards Brigade of the Croatian Army, some of whom came from Australia to defend Croatia and joined the brigade. A particularly notable photograph is that of Tiger Petar Dukarić, who is 17 years old in the image, with a “Guns N’ Roses” sign behind him—an iconic photograph that has circulated worldwide and symbolizes the youth who defended Croatia and the pursuit of freedom.

Photographs of the final operations and campaigns of the Croatian Army are also displayed, including Skok ’95, Ljeto ’95, Bljesak, and Oluja. Additionally, photographs of the Tigers from the Karlovac County area are shown from liberated locations: Lička Jesenica, Slunj, Rakovica, and Tržačke Raštele.

The exhibition also includes the brigade’s historical overview, the brigade flag, and the association’s flag.

A memorial list of 368 fallen and 5 missing members of the Tigers is presented, including their photographs, full names, dates of birth, and dates and places of death. To them, we owe eternal gratitude.

The exhibition is hosted in cooperation with the Association of War Veterans and Members of the Guards Unit Tigers Karlovac and with the support of the City of Split. It will remain open to the public until May 20, 2026.
