Zoran Velić, piano - Split Circle

Pianist Zoran Velić is one of the most prominent musicians in Split, and the audience has had the opportunity to witness a series of outstanding performances and refined interpretations, whether in solo performances or as a collaborator with rare sensibility, engaging in collaborations with singers and instrumentalists. A graduate of the Music Academy in Zagreb under the guidance of Đorđe Stanetti, and further honing his skills at the prestigious Mozarteum in Salzburg, Zoran Velić nurtures a broad repertoire. For his solo recital in the upcoming season, he selects a series of masterpieces from one of the most beautiful piano opuses, that of Frédéric Chopin – the first and second of the four Scherzos.

These compositions, with their vast scope and rich content, see Chopin departing from the light, humorous character of the scherzo genre, delving into deep lyricism, "gestures of despair, and demonic energy." Similar to the Scherzos, Chopin's four Ballades are technically and expressively more demanding, with their dense musical texture rooted in the poetry of Polish national poet and Chopin's friend, Adam Mickiewicz. The Ballade No. 4 in F minor is considered one of the peaks of Chopin's oeuvre, alongside the Andante spianato et Grande polonaise brillante, a virtuosic, opulent work where the nocturnal mood of the first part transforms into a fireworks display of bold polonaise phrases. The recital begins with the Fantasy in F minor, one of those compositions where Chopin surrenders to the romantic freedom of inspiration, guided by the laws of harmonic and melodic beauty and the pianistic sound that continues to captivate with its freshness and originality.
