Split Artists: Meet Vasko Lipovac
When talking about great artists and their works exhibited in Split, first thought is usually Ivan Meštrović and Meštrović Gallery, probably the most visited museum in Split. Second might be the Emanuel Vidovic Gallery dedicated to works of probably the most important Split artist from first half of 20th century. There is also the Gallery of Fine Arts with its superb permanent collection and intriguing regular exhibitions. All three of them are based in or close to the old town, and thus better known to visitors.
However, why not looking for some art experience beyond the usual sightseeing paths? Let's say all the way to the University of Split campus? Important part of the campus is University Library, and in its northern wing you can find beautiful gallery with permanent collection of one of the Croatia's most important late 20th century artist Vasko Lipovac.
Vasko Lipovac was born in Kotor, Montenegro, but spent most of his life in Split (he died in 2006), and most of his works were narrowly connected with Split, Dalmatia and Mediterranean. His studio still stands in Split, and is a witness of his working energy and talent. Two years ago, University stepped forward to dedicate one of its most representative spaces to an artist of Mr Lipovac' importance.
And he is indeed important, and worth checking. Vasko Lipovac is one of the most prominent Croatian modern artists, with international recognition, too. For Split, his connection with the city is almost equally important. So, don't hesitate, visit University Gallery, it's open during library's working hours, or just check on +385 (0)21 434 808. And in case you like it (and trust me, you will), you can also visit Lipovac Studio with nice souvenirs, or prints. In case you visit Zagreb these days, don't miss Lipovac retrospective in Klovićevi Dvori Gallery.
