Photo New Year!

Photo New Year!

Recently I wrote about favourite holiday seasons customs in Split, most of them are connected with Christmas. However, there is another tradition which I like very much, and is strictly associated with a New Year's Eve. If I wanted to be more ambitious, I would say that for Split, opening of one particular exhibition is the same like descending New Year's ball at New York's Times Square. I'm exaggerating? Well, probably, but meet me at midnight in Fotoklub Split on the opening of New Year's Photo Exhibition, and I will try to explain it.

This exhibition is the first cultural event in Split every year, and this tradition is maintained for years in the small but important Gallery of Photography in Marmontova Street, halfway between Riva and National Theatre. It usually starts few minutes after New Year countdown, and fireworks, so you will have enough time to get there even if you celebrate arrival of 2017 at concert on Riva.

Once when you arrive, you will become a part of one of the nicest local stories. Split is really one of the hotspots of Croatian photography, and this exhibition is one of the evidences for that claim. New Year's exhibitions usually represent some of the highlights of Split school of photography, so pleasure is actually multiple. You will enjoy some great photography, and meet equally great crowd. I'm maybe too subjective about this, but for me that night would hardly be completed without this event.

This year we are facing real treat at the opening of art year in Split. Fotoklub will feature works by Nenad Šaljić, one of the most awarded and internationally recognized photographers in today's Split. At the exhibition he will present his collection Birth of a Ship, one of the projects that brought him several awards, both for photographs, and a book he is about to publish soon. Nenad follows, literally, birth of a ship, step by step, in beautiful black and white images which show a ship almost as a living form. After all, see for yourself while browsing through photo gallery on this link.

There is nothing else I can do but to invite you to be part of such a great event, and wish you all the best in 2017!
