NEW SOUND: FILM PROGRAM

NEW SOUND: FILM PROGRAM

Location: Amphitheatre, Dom mladih Split (Ulica slobode 28)

Dates: March 27 – June 5

Multimedia Cultural Centre Split, as part of the Novi šum 2026 program, presents a film cycle that will take place at the Amphitheatre of Dom mladih. Screenings begin at the end of March and will precede the concerts within the program.

While the musical segment of Novi šum focuses on contemporary alternative and electronic music, the film program expands it both thematically and conceptually, maintaining genre curiosity and openness. Through a selection of documentary portraits, film essays, and experimental titles, the cycle creates dialogues between filmmakers and musicians, explores innovative sound practices, the history of the avant-garde, the social role of music, as well as the future of sonic expression.

Admission to all screenings is free, and films are shown with Croatian subtitles.

PROGRAM

  • March 27 at 19:30 | Last and First Men, dir. Jóhann Jóhannsson (IS, 2020, 70')

A science-fiction, visual and musical meditation by the Icelandic composer at the height of his creative power. A film about the last human species addressing us from a utopian future, from the site of our collective memory.

  • April 10 at 19:00 | Soundtrack for a Coup d'État, dir. Johan Grimonprez (BE/FR/NL/US, 2024, 150')

An award-winning documentary essay exploring the unexpected connection between jazz and global politics during the Cold War era. Grimonprez deconstructs a historical episode in which the U.S. State Department used jazz elites as a diplomatic cover for covert operations in the Congo. Through masterful archival montage, the film builds a history lesson that functions as a powerful political-artistic statement.

  • April 24 at 19:30 | Soundtrack Dialogues for Short Film (51')

The Great White Emptiness, dir. Michaela Grill (AT, 2015, 16')

An audiovisual contemplation of Arctic horizons and the soundscapes of Philip Jeck.

  • Joy, dir. Jodie Mack (US, 2005, 3')

An abstract animation created directly on film for the Four Tet project.

  • Black and White Tryptych No. 3, dir. Ben Russell (US, 2007, 12')

A transformation of the audience into a ritual trance of the highest order at a noise concert by the legendary Lightning Bolt.

  • Reel to Reel, dir. Stefano Canapa (FR, 2020, 20')

A diptych on transitions from reel to reel, from magnetic tape to film, inspired by the improvisational skill of Jérôme Noetinger.

  • May 9 at 19:30 | Sun Ra: Impossible Is the Goal, dir. Christine Turner (US, 2025, 84')

A documentary portrait of visionary jazz musician and composer Sun Ra, who, with his ever-evolving Arkestras, pushed the boundaries of free jazz and created a unique musical and spiritual vision of Afrofuturism that continues to inspire generations of artists and musicians.

  • May 22 at 19:30 | Answer to the Sun, dir. Rainer Kohlberger (AT/DE, 2022, 60')

An invitation to the audience for intense sensory stimulation, a maximalist experience of “looking into the sun” that creates wondrous retinal imprints and challenges the ear to generate sound on its own. A radical declaration of love for cinema as a space of collective yet deeply individual experience.

Warning: The film is not suitable for people with epilepsy.

  • June 5 at 19:30 | Peaches Goes Bananas, dir. Marie Losier (FR/BE, 2024, 73')

An intimate insight into the world of electroclash, queer, and feminist icon Peaches, both on stage and off. The film captures the evolution of this radical artist—from her early pedagogical days to global stardom—along with her encounters with life’s transformations and losses, driven by a force that ignites life itself.
