EXHIBITION BY MIROSLAV LELAS: "EVEN THE ELDEST DON'T REMEBER THIS"
Location: Photo Club Split (Marmontova 5)
Date: September 25 – October 14, 2025
On Thursday, September 25, at 8 p.m., the Fotoklub Split Photography Gallery will host a solo exhibition by long-time Fotoklub Split member Miroslav Lelas, cleverly titled “Even the Eldest Don’t Remember This”. This is his second solo exhibition in twelve years of photojournalistic work, and his first at his home club. The exhibition brings together fourteen stories created between 2016 and 2025, each accompanied by a brief informative text that places the photographs in the context of news or social events. The texts are authored by journalists Mario Matana and Ivana Perković.
As curator Ana Žanko writes in the foreword, the selection of works did not follow strict criteria but was guided by the author’s personal logic and inner sense—a desire to gather in one place the stories and scenes that have marked the past decade.
The exhibition presents a diverse range of scenes: from ships stranded on Marjan Hill, to fires, floods, and the pandemic, to frames dedicated to Hajduk and the Pelješac Bridge. Some stories developed over several years; for example, the series on Žnjan provides an overview of one of Split’s largest urban transformations—from the “ugly duckling” (2016) to the “swan” (2025)—while the cycles on the Pelješac Bridge and Karepovac follow topics of long-term public interest.
“Lelas’s photographs do not merely capture an event, but also its progression,” emphasizes Žanko, “creating before the viewer a continuous record of change over time.” They are “technically measured and thoughtfully composed; they inform, but are at the same time both document and artifact of the era—with a clear awareness that every published image carries responsibility toward the audience.”
With this exhibition, Fotoklub Split continues its practice of annually providing a young photographer with full exhibition production—including printing of photographs and catalogues, installation, and collaboration with designers, curators, and the program director.
Miroslav Lelas (Split, 1997) began photography at the age of sixteen; he has worked for Dalmacija News and Dalmacija Danas, and later for PIXSELL and HINA, and collaborates with international agencies such as the Associated Press, European Pressphoto Agency, and Anadolu Agency. In 2022, he earned the title of Master of Photography and launched his own photo agency. A long-time member of Fotoklub Split, he is the author and co-author of several projects, including “Štorija o plisnacu” (with Milan Šabić), shown at the Ethnographic Museum Split, City Center One, the Benkovac Fair, and other venues.
