Jon Jost in Split: The Balladic Life of Film at Film Mutations: The Festival of Invisible Film
Location: Multiple venues (Kino Karaman, UMAS, Kino Klub Split)
Dates: November 13–19, 2025
Legendary American filmmaker and video artist Jon Jost is coming to Split as the main guest of the 19th edition of Film Mutations: The Festival of Invisible Film, taking place from November 13 to 20, 2025, across several venues, featuring film screenings, workshops, and talks with the author.
The 19th edition of Film Mutations: The Festival of Invisible Film focuses on a retrospective and guest appearance by Jon Jost, one of the most significant independent filmmakers of contemporary cinema. For six decades, Jost has worked outside the film industry, developing a radically personal approach and his own model of independent filmmaking. The program is organized in collaboration with the Split Film Festival / International Festival of New Film, the Academy of Fine Arts in Split (UMAS), and Kino Klub Split.
Jost, known for his uncompromising artistic vision and independent working methods, has made over a hundred films – ranging from early 16mm and 35mm works to digital video pieces and installations. His films have been shown at numerous international festivals, including Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, and Toronto, and in 1991 the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York presented a full retrospective of his work.
At Kino Karaman, from November 13 to 15, audiences will be able to see a selection of Jost’s key films – including Slow Moves, Homecoming, All the Vermeers in New York, and The Bed You Sleep In – followed by a conversation with the filmmaker.
At the Academy of Fine Arts in Split (UMAS), Jost will hold a masterclass titled “Cutting Things Short” (November 14), accompanied by screenings of short digital films (Tanti auguri, San Lorenzo, Vera x 3, My Life as a Midge), as well as a digital film and video workshop (November 17–19).
At Kino Klub Split, he will co-lead a film essay writing workshop together with renowned film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum.
This year’s festival theme, “The Decadence of Attention: The Balladic Life of Film” explores contemporary politics of viewing and new forms of attention in film and visual art, connecting theory, curatorial practice, and artistic work.
The Split program is curated by Marin Renić (Split Festival of New Film and Video), Tanja Vrvilo (Film Mutations, UMAS), Sandra Sterle, Dan Oki, and Gildo Bavčević (UMAS), and Sunčica Fradelić (Kino Klub Split).
After Split, the festival continues in Zagreb (November 21–26: Kino Kinoteka, KIC, Kino Forum) and Rijeka (December 1–3: Art-kino), with connected programs in Tirana (Albanian Cinematheque and AVAN – Albanian Visual Arts Network) and Ljubljana (Slovenian Cinematheque and Slovenian Film Archive).
The Film Mutations: Festival of Invisible Film project, founded in 2007 by Tanja Vrvilo, explores innovative film practices and histories of minority cinema. Today, it is held in collaboration with numerous partner institutions in Croatia and across the region.
The festival is organized by the art organization Film-protufilm, with the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Zagreb Office for Culture and Civil Society, and the Kultura nova Foundation.
