Dates: October 29 - 30, 2026
Location: Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split (Poljička cesta 35, 21000 Split)
Marking the 20th anniversary of the death of Željko Mardešić (1933–2006), a prominent Croatian sociologist of religion and Catholic intellectual, Split will host a scientific conference dedicated to his life, work and intellectual legacy.
Under the title Divisions within the Sacred — Divisions within Society, the conference will explore Mardešić’s understanding of the relationship between religion and society, his criticism of ideological exclusivity, and his advocacy of dialogue, tolerance and openness to the modern world. His ideas remain particularly relevant in the context of contemporary social divisions and challenges surrounding the role of religion in public life.
The conference is co-organised by the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, and is open to the public.
