On Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., we are opening a remarkable exhibition by American photographer Deanna Dikeman. This is the world-renowned photographic series “Leaving and Waving”, created over a period of 27 years, during which the artist photographed her parents at the driveway in front of their home every time she left after a visit.

The exhibition is presented as a guest program of the Sarajevo Photography Festival (SPF), a leading regional platform for contemporary photography. Each year, the festival brings together emerging and established artists, promotes artistic exchange, socially relevant themes, and cultural cooperation. Exhibitions are held in galleries, public, and alternative spaces, while education is one of the key segments of the festival, featuring free workshops and lectures led by internationally recognized photographers and curators. SPF fosters openness and aims to become a platform for the exchange of ideas and a meeting place for local and regional artists. 

Deanna Dikeman (born 1954 in Sioux City, Iowa, USA) lives in Kansas City, USA. She graduated from Purdue University. After leaving her corporate job in 1985 to take a photography course, she began documenting her Midwestern American family and their surroundings. She received the Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship in 1996 and the United States Artists Booth Fellowship in 2008. In 2023, she became a Guggenheim Fellow. Since 1988, she has held 24 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 160 group exhibitions. A New Yorker article titled “A Photographer’s Parents Wave Farewell” was ranked among the magazine’s 25 best stories of 2020. The series “Leaving and Waving” also won the Prix Nadar in 2021, awarded by the French association Gens d’Images, and the book was a finalist for the Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award in 2021. Photographs from this series have been exhibited at festivals, museums, and galleries in thirteen countries worldwide.
