The exhibition Deep in Thoughts by Hungarian artist Diána Verebélyi opens at the Institute for Scientific and Artistic Research of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) in Split.

The exhibition presents a painterly body of work that explores the relationship between external reality and the inner world of thought. Rather than depicting the visible world, Verebélyi constructs a visual language that reflects experience, emotion, and consciousness — a space in which thoughts shape our perception of reality. Her compositions are characterized by reduced spatial settings and undefined time, while figures appear within psychological landscapes. Drawing on the tradition of the Szentendre School, the artist develops a distinctive expression in which geometric forms such as circles, squares, passages, and bridges carry both structural and symbolic roles, establishing a balance between the rational and the intuitive.

Through a combination of Constructivism, Symbolism, and Surrealism, Diána Verebélyi’s works raise questions about the nature of reality: do we live in the world we see, or in the one we create with our thoughts?

About the artist: Diána Verebélyi (1987, Kazincbarcika, Hungary) is a contemporary artist active on the international art scene. Throughout her career, she has held more than 50 solo exhibitions and participated in over 300 group exhibitions. She lives and works in Szentendre, and her practice is shaped by influences of Constructivism and the Szentendre art school. In her work, she explores the relationship between thought, perception, and reality, giving visual form to inner psychological states.
