Exhibition: "Lošinj ships, their flags and their people"

Location: Croatian Maritime Museum, Split (Glagoljaška 18)

Dates: May 4 – June 7, 2026 | Opening: 7:00 PM

After the exhibition dedicated to the rich maritime heritage of the island was presented in September 2025 on the island of Lošinj, in cooperation between the Lošinj Museum and the Croatian Maritime Museum Split, its expanded edition is now being presented in Split.

On the eve of the feast of Saint Domnius, the Split audience will be introduced to the story of Lošinj as one of the most important maritime centres of the eastern Adriatic—an island where shipbuilding, seafaring, and maritime education have developed for centuries, and whose captains and crews sailed the world’s oceans, shaping the history of Croatian maritime tradition that we study and preserve today. Through documents, photographs, and ship models, and especially through the lens of changing ship flags, the exhibition traces this development from its early modern beginnings, through the peak of the sailing fleet in the 19th century, and up to the challenges of the modern era. Among the particularly notable exhibits is the only known preserved flag of the Margraviate of Istria, to which Lošinj once belonged, currently kept in the Interpretation Centre of Maritime Heritage of the Island of Krk – Željko Skomeršić Collection.

The Split edition of the exhibition also brings new elements compared to the Lošinj presentation: part of the material from the holdings of the Croatian Maritime Museum Split will be exhibited in this context for the first time, further expanding the perspective on the connections between Lošinj and the wider Adriatic area. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about intriguing individuals whose lives connected Mali Lošinj and Split.

With the opening of this exhibition, the Croatian Maritime Museum Split continues to develop cooperation with numerous institutions that preserve the maritime heritage of the Croatian Adriatic. The presentation of one segment of Lošinj’s maritime history in Split is part of this continuity: an exchange of materials, knowledge, and interpretations that together shape a more complete picture of our maritime past.

The exhibition is authored by Petra Radić and Daniela Kušpilić Grubišić from the Croatian Maritime Museum Split, with graphic design by Nikola Križanac. The exhibition is accompanied by a special new catalogue edition.
