EXHIBITION OF THE 31ST SPLIT FILM FESTIVAL: “MEDIA ART COMPETITION”

EXHIBITION OF THE 31ST SPLIT FILM FESTIVAL: “MEDIA ART COMPETITION”

Location: Salon Galić Gallery (Marmontova 3)

Dates: September 11 – October 8, 2026

Curator: Ana Čukušić

From the curator’s text, Ana Čukušić: Media art competition is facing a new challenge of self-renewal. Today, media art finds itself in a situation where the question ‘What is a medium?’ is no longer sufficient. A medium can no longer be understood simply as a technical tool or material used in an artwork. The question shifts toward what is mediated through media: what stands between us and reality, how technologies shape our experience, and how images, interfaces, algorithms, and communication systems participate in constructing the world we inhabit. The exhibition brings together five works that explore these relationships, each from its own perspective. Eric del Castillo (Croatia), Angela Bedekovic and Matthias Grunsky (Germany), Huang Jianming (Italy/China), Urška Preis (Slovenia), and Jenna Caravello (USA) approach their work through different media and technological processes, but do not treat them as neutral tools.”

As part of the 31st edition of the festival, a special gallery programme dedicated to video works, video installations, new media, and performances by Croatian and international artists is being introduced, continuing the festival’s earlier practices. The works share a common focus on creativity, experimentation, and pushing the boundaries of media art and authorship.
