International Symposium: When Images Stare Back at Us

Location: Kino klub Split, Youth center Split (Ulica slobode 28)

Date: 28–30 May 2026

From 28 to 30 May 2026, Split will host the international symposium When Images Stare Back at Us (Kad slike uzvrate pogled).

The symposium brings together filmmakers and researchers who will share their artistic and research practices with the public. Participating speakers include Karla Crnčević (Croatia), Anaís Córdova-Páez (Ecuador), Alia Ayman (Egypt), Laura Alhach (Colombia), Bilge Emir (Turkey), Open River Archive represented by Verónica Boggio and Lorena García (Peru), behshad tajammol (Iran), Sita Magfira (Indonesia), Kumjana Novakova (North Macedonia), KURS represented by Mirjana Radovanović (Serbia), and Ivana Perić (Croatia).

All presentations will take place at Kino klub Split, with the exception of Ivana Perić’s lecture, which will be held at Društvo arhitekata Splita on 29 May at 20:00.

The symposium explores what happens when images cease to be seen merely as documents, preserved objects, or materials for interpretation, and instead begin to demand a response. Drawing on the work of Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, the program considers images as spaces of political relations, raising questions of memory, power, visibility, and responsibility.

Over the course of three days, the symposium examines what it means to work with images today—in archives, film, institutions, and public space. It addresses the tension between preservation and interpretation, documentation and intervention, history and political accountability.

Ivana Perić: Sports Archives as Platforms of Resistance / From Hajduk to Palestine

Ivana Perić’s lecture focuses on the history of local sport and its erased or altered archives, viewing sport as a collectively created platform of resistance. Through stories ranging from HNK Hajduk Split in the 1940s to contemporary Palestinian calls for sports boycotts, the presentation explores how solidarity has been built across borders and how sports, like culture, have mobilized collective forms of resistance.

Language: English (except for Ivana Perić’s lecture)
