A unique fusion of circus aerial dynamics in a play of freedom and creativity

As part of its annual "Artist in Residence" program, Cirkus Kolektiv presents a work-in-progress performance of "Isola Ta" by Italian artist Gaia Santuccio. The performance is part of the artist's residency and features the discipline of aerial rope. Following the performance, a short discussion with the artist will take place, where you are invited to share your thoughts and impressions.

"Isola Ta" is an impressive artistic installation exploring the feelings of isolation and limitation, as well as the possibilities that arise from them. Inspired by the artist's personal experience during the pandemic, the installation recreates her room as a white island, detached from the outside world. Practically, Isola Ta takes place in a dark space. The piece is in black and white.

The set design features a wooden platform that invisibly lowers from the ceiling to the floor throughout the performance, gradually shrinking the vertical space to an almost ground-level enclosure. The white platform and 2x2-meter white linoleum beneath it outline and emphasize the confined white space. Through her interaction with the aerial rope within this limited space, the artist explores movement, freedom, and creativity, creating an intimate atmosphere that encourages the audience to reflect on their own experiences and perceptions of the world. Isola Ta is more than just a portrayal of isolation; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to find beauty and creativity even in the most challenging circumstances.

Gaia Santuccio, an artist and aerial rope instructor from Sicily, brings a wealth of experience and passion for movement into her work. After completing her Master’s degree in contemporary circus practices, she refined her technique and developed her unique "Rope Manipulation" methodology. Through an interdisciplinary approach that includes dance, writing, photography, and other artistic forms, she explores the meaning of body language, creating distinctive performances. In addition to leading international workshops, she collaborates with the Italian theater company NèonTeatar, which works with performers of diverse abilities, promoting inclusivity and diversity. Her work is driven by a desire to spread a love for movement and inspire others to discover their creative potential.
