A total of 64 plays have been registered for the 35th edition of Marulić Days, with participants from Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Italy, Germany, and Portugal. More specifically, there are 53 plays from Croatia, 2 from Serbia, 1 from Slovenia, 1 from Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1 from North Macedonia, 3 from Montenegro, 1 from Italy, 1 from Germany, and 1 Croatian-Portuguese co-production.

 

Compared to last year, this is an increase of 10 plays, which once again, or perhaps even more strongly, confirms the vitality and relevance of Croatian playwrights, dramaturges, and authors who, through their deep engagement with contemporary issues, offer reliable and intriguing theatrical choices, both in institutional and independent theater scenes. Excluding a few adaptations of works from the Croatian dramatic canon, such as those by Držić, Krleža, and Marinković, most of the plays are by contemporary playwrights or are authorial projects in which the text emerges from collective work or an authorial research process. These works always focus on current themes, on what we live through on a daily basis.

 

This year, the audience will be able to see a total of 6 dramatic texts, including 3 world premieres, 2 adaptations, and 5 authorial projects, most of which are based on solid dramatic structures but written collectively or through a research-driven process. Their thematic concerns are deeply embedded in our contemporary world, whether they deal with war and post-war trauma, whose far-reaching consequences remain stuck in a transgenerational sense of sorrow, guilt, and helplessness, or the exploration and dissection of family, love, friendship, and even professional relationships, all of which are significantly influenced by various social and ideological pressures, imperatives, and prejudices.
