Split on a Palm

Split on a Palm

Split is undeniably beautiful no matter of angle or perspective from where you are looking at it. If you try to convince some local patriot that it's not true, you might find yourself in a serious trouble. However, what if you want to see this city like it's lying on your palm? Where and how to go to get a million dolar panoramic view? There are few options, one better than another.

One of the most obvious is the bell tower of Saint Domnio Cathedral. It's in the very heart of the city, and almost impossible to miss. View from the tallest bell tower in Dalmatia (57 meters) is magnificient, and goes in all directions. That makes it the most popular spot for all those who like to see cities they are visiting like it's on their palm. If you don't have any height issue, and don't have problems climbing tower's steep stairs, there is only one flaw; you will not be able to see cathedral's bell tower.

Just accross the square, you will have excellent opportunity to observe the bell tower if climb to a terrace over Vestibule, ceremonial entrance into a once imperial residence of the Diocletian's Palace. You can reach it through the Ethnographic Museum, and view is great, although not reaching that far like the one from the bell tower. Besides being more acceptable for those afraid of height, bonus is a view to Peristil, the Palace's central square.

If you like nature, there is no better view than the one from Marjan's viewpoint. Even if you are not in the best physical shape, you will not have problem reaching a terrace next to the old Jewish cemeter. If longer walks through nature are your thing, forest park Marjan is perfect spot for you. Same goes for all those cycling, running, climbing, swimming etc. fans. And when you are already making an effort, go to Marjan's highest spot, 180-meters high Telegrin. You will catch amazing view, circling from mountains Kozjak and Mosor, islands, Kaštela bay, all the way to Trogir. And whole Split, of course. This time you will have nice part of Central Dalmatia on your palm and in your eye.

There are interesting viewing points beyond Split, too. It's a great experience to look at Split from Klis fortress, even if your main motivation is to imitate Daenerys Stormborne from the Game of Thrones.

Mountain goers will find some more spots, like peaks on Kozjak and Mosor, but that goes into another category.
