Splitting on Two Wheels

Splitting on Two Wheels

I know, in these boiling hot days idea of riding a bicycle can look almost suicidal to anyone who is not really a pedalling fanatic. Still, biking became increasingly popular in Split, both by locals and our visitors. To be honest, popularity of bicycling in Split has not yet been completely followed by the infrastructure, and riding on traffic-packed city streets without bicycle tracks can be even more adventurous than a mountain biking. Once you get used to that, and survive it, you will enjoy on many excellent routes in the nature, with some truly spectacular views. Not to mention avoiding parking problems.

If you want to stay within city boundaries, my favourite choice is Marjan, hill and forest park west of the old town. Trust me on that, there are dozens of kilometres of road and off-road trails there, for any kind of bicycling. Going uphill is not extremely demanding, and even if you need to stop frequently for rest views from any given spot is more than rewarding. Within the city it's also great to ride a bike along the sea, eastern-bound, on a promenade around Žnjan beach. To make search less complicated, and if you don't feel like exploring by yourself, check out some of these routes I like to ride.

If you like more demanding routes, you can find a galore of excellent options in and around Split, but also inland Dalmatia and on islands. Recently, Split-Dalmatian County Tourist Board promoted some very interesting trails, and there are lots of agencies with tours on those routes. If you like being more adventurous, check out my favourite list of routes on DinarideTrails web site. They offer detailed description of routes, with length and technical demand rate between one and ten. Unfortunately, site is only in Croatian, but maps are available.

If you don't travel with your own bikes, number of rental agencies is growing. All of them have similar prices, which depend on a rent length, and range of bikes they are offering. Also, they all offer additional equipment, including kids' seats or helmets. The best part is that almost all of them are based in the Split city centre. To avoid missing some of them, here is the quick Google search.

There is another solution, popular among locals. On the northern gate of Marjan Forest Park, you can rent a bike by hour, and then enjoy riding it around the hill, or just use the bike to go to some of the beaches on Marjan.
