"How aware are we of where we live, where we are here and now? How often do we pause, turn around, and look back? Is it not precisely in this backward glance that the possibility of envisioning the future resides, as Ursula K. Le Guin suggests in her seminal essay A Non-Euclidean View of California as a Cold Place to Be*?* Jagoda's Room – Spaces That Remain is precisely such an endeavour. This long-term artistic research project by Nina Kurtela emerges from the specific spatial and temporal conditions of a 25-square-metre city studio in the centre of Zagreb, which the artist has occupied and worked in since 2017. By entering the studio once used by Jagoda Kaloper, Kurtela established a working method that extends beyond the present moment, treating the space as a layered archaeological site where different temporal strata, the material traces of its former occupant, and imagined fragments intersect. Together, they create a living archive of communitas as well as artistic continuity." (Excerpt from the exhibition foreword by Ivana Meštrov.)

Nina Kurtela is an artist whose practice lies at the intersection of contemporary visual art and expanded choreographic practices. Through installations, film, performance, and site-specific works, she develops long-term artistic processes that evolve and transform across different media over time. She approaches artistic practice as a space of duration, persistence, and attentive engagement. Her work has been presented in museums, galleries, and international festivals, including HKW – Haus der Kulturen der Welt and KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), MUMOK (Vienna), Kunsthaus Graz, MUCEM (Marseille), Tokyo Opera City Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, as well as Transmediale, Tanz im August, and the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. She has received numerous awards, including the Japanese Media Arts New Face Award, Henkel Art Award CEE, Essl Art Award CEE, and the X-border Art Biennial Award, and was nominated for the Berlin Art Prize in 2018. She has also participated in international artist residency programmes, including Cité internationale des arts (Paris), Amant Siena, HIAP (Helsinki), Q21 / MuseumsQuartier (Vienna), THAV (Taipei), and danceWEB / ImPulsTanz (Vienna). In 2017, upon moving into Jagoda Kaloper's former studio, Kurtela founded the Jagoda art organisation with the aim of promoting and reactivating overlooked women's artistic heritage while creating a space for critical dialogue, exchange, and the development of new artistic practices. Through the studio, the Future Repair archive, and the Exercises programme, she has fostered a community of learning and exchange that brings together artists from different generations and disciplines.
