EXHIBITION BY MILAN VULPE: “RETROSPECTIVE”

EXHIBITION BY MILAN VULPE: “RETROSPECTIVE”

Location: Museum of Fine Arts (Ulica kralja Tomislava 15)

Dates: March 7 – April 26, 2026

The retrospective exhibition of Milan Vulpe is exceptionally extensive—it presents more than 800 of Vulpe’s works—yet at the same time not large enough to encompass the entire oeuvre of this remarkably prolific designer. In 2014, the Museum of Arts and Crafts acquired around 3,000 works along with a rich archival collection in which Vulpe carefully preserved hundreds of sketches, drafts, photographs of his works, as well as documents such as business records and correspondence.

Thanks to the large number of clients he worked with over his forty-year career (the exhibition features, to a greater or lesser extent, around one hundred out of approximately 350 companies and institutions he collaborated with), the exhibition also represents a kind of journey through the past of Croatian and Yugoslav industry. At the same time, the extensive accompanying archive has provided a unique insight into Vulpe’s working methods, as well as a fresh perspective on now-forgotten “analog” design techniques.

About the author: Milan Vulpe was born in 1918 in Dubrovnik. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1938 and graduated in 1947 in the class of Vladimir Becić. From 1946 to 1948, he worked as a designer of film posters and advertisements at the Film Distribution Company Zagreb (a distribution company for domestic and foreign films, later known as Croatia Film).
