“The photographic series Drom by Darko Škrobonja unfolds as a meditation on movement, perception, and the transformation of matter. The title, derived from the Greek word dromos (“path”) and the Romani word drom (“road, journey”), suggests a voyage without a fixed destination—an open trajectory through space and material.

The photographs, taken during the artist’s travels across different continents, depict fragments of urban environments: walls, floors, and streets. Through a subtle play of color and composition, the images approach painterly abstraction, yet the details of architecture, traces of decay, and surface erosion remain visible—anchoring the works in the tangible world and positioning them at the threshold between the representational and the non-representational.

Rather than describing a specific cultural or geographic context, Drom explores the idea of movement—of passage, transience, and the flow of matter—while skillfully avoiding any explicit depiction of motion. In this sense, the work resonates with the philosophy of Thomas Nail, who considers movement the fundamental principle of reality. According to Nail, the world is not a collection of stable, immutable objects, but a continuum of ever-changing processes and relations. His philosophy of flux replaces the notion of fixed being with constant becoming and transformation.

Similarly, Drom rejects conceptual fixity: the photographs are static and carefully composed, yet they evoke continuous processes of transformation, decay, and the passing of time, allowing the viewer to contemplate flux and change through abstraction. Through its abstracted surfaces and soft tonal harmonies, the Drom series becomes a visual reflection on the dynamics of passage—how forms, materials, and perceptions shift through time and space. The series stands at the threshold between image and idea, where photography moves from documentation to a meditation on movement and becoming.” (From the exhibition text by Tonči Kranjčević Batalić)
