Since its inception in 1954, this renowned event has hosted numerous iconic performances and happenings. As a staple of Croatia’s cultural calendar, the festival boasts a rich program filled with performing arts, live music, exhibitions, movies, street theatre, and more, consistently impressing audiences.
The 2024 edition aims to uphold this tradition, with the month-long celebration (from July 15 to August 14) featuring four special premieres — an opera, a ballet, and two dramas, capping off a wonderfully creative feast.
Festival director Vicko Bilandźić describes the 2024 lineup as “rich and ambitious,” and it's easy to see why.
The festival kicks off at the Peristyle with Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” conducted by Ivan Hut and directed by Michał Znaniecki.
The opera program continues with revivals of “Aida” and “Ero the Joker,” culminating in a grand opera gala concert at the Meštrović Gallery.
Ballet enthusiasts should mark August 2 and 3 for a fresh take on “Madame Bovary” by the bold choreographer Valentina Turcu.
The premiere drama selections include Dražen Krešić’s “Judita,” commemorating the 500th anniversary of Marko Marulić’s death, and “Stories from the Ferry” by Anica Tomić, Jelena Kovačić, and Ivor Martinić, featuring about 20 actors from the Croatian National Theatre Split and promising a captivating performance.
With an eclectic concert schedule ranging from intimate solo acts to grand orchestras, the 70th Split Summer Festival is set to be unforgettable.
