EXHIBITION BY MATIJA DEBELJUH: “TRILOGY OF HISTORICAL REPETITION – PART ONE”
Location: MKC Gallery – Youth Centre Split (Ulica slobode 28)
Date: 5–26 November 2026, opening at 7 PM
The project Trilogy of Historical Repetition is based on the artist’s research into his own photographic and video archive and its bringing together in the present. The first part of the trilogy takes the form of video installations that combine archival materials with new visual recordings created over the past twenty years.
The artist constructs a fragmented visual narrative in which clear boundaries between past and present, personal and collective, documentary and fictional are blurred. Within the moving image, photography ceases to be a frozen moment, while archival video moves beyond its original chronological and documentary function. Trilogy of Historical Repetition does not treat time as a linear sequence of events, but rather as a layered structure in which the past continuously reappears within the present. The archive becomes a space where different generations, memories and perspectives meet, while also serving as a starting point for questioning how images shape our understanding of our own past.
The project builds on the artist’s earlier work Utopia, which focused on the recontextualisation of his own artistic practice and the exploration of contemporary art photography, extending this research into the realms of moving images, archives and the spatial dimension of video installation.
