FantaSTikon Celebrates 10 Years of Existence

For the tenth time, the F&ST Association is organizing FantaSTikon, a three-day convention of fantasy, board games, and science fiction, at the Split FESB from March 15th to 17th, 2024.

The decade of FantaSTikon will be marked by an exhibition of visuals by graphic artists Kristina Bilota and Josipa Šarić, who, each for five years, voluntarily created fantastic visual identities for all previous conventions. Alongside visuals, there will be a photo exhibition and a selection of the most scandalous bulletins, and for all visitors, a special (and rewarding) treasure hunt is prepared.

At the tenth convention, we celebrate 20 years of existence of Araton, the seminal trilogy of Croatian speculative fiction. We will discuss this with its author, the doyen of Croatian SF and honorary guest of the 10th FantaSTikon, Oliver Franić.

In addition to Franić, the honorary guest is Professor Emeritus at the International Centre of Theoretical Physics and a professor at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Dr. Goran Senjanović, a prominent world physicist of elementary particles. He will speak about his field, especially the mysterious neutrinos that pass through you in billions while reading this.

A special guest is Ed Barol, an award-winning and internationally published SF (and more) writer from Šibenik, who will present his new transhumanistic SF novel "Boja neba" (The Color of the Sky). Alongside Oliver Franić, Dr. Ivica Vilibić, and Dr. Mladen Šolić, Barol will participate in a panel discussion on whether to adapt humans to the environment or the environment to humans (transhumanism vs. terraforming). On a similar topic, a lecture will be held by Zoran Vukšić from the Permaculture Dalmatia association, who will attempt to answer the question of whether we should create a new Earth at all.

From the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, postdoctoral researcher and assistant, Dr. Barbara Arbanas Ferreira, will present an autonomous multi-robot system for sea monitoring and intervention operations, awarded in February this year at a prestigious international robotics competition in Abu Dhabi.

As always, FantaSTikon offers a rich literary program. In addition to Franić and Barol, we will host Srebrenka Peregrin, who will tell folk tales on the topic of terraforming and present the continuation of her fantasy novels about Frina, a rising courtesan. Tanja Radman will present a new collection of short stories, “Hipnagogija” (Hypnagogia), and Vedran Mavrović, an award-winning writer and illustrator, will conduct an introductory watercolor painting course.

Joining us from the FESB in Split is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vjekoslav Tvrdić in a unique blend of mechanical engineering and literature, with a writing workshop titled “Machine Elements and Steampunk.” Marko Fančović, a longtime lecturer at most conventions in Croatia and the surrounding area, will discuss the century of the fantasy master Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian. We are particularly pleased to host again Assoc. Prof. Dr. Josip Ćirić with the lecture “Tolkien Encyclopedia – Web, Fantasy, and Worldbuilding” and Split graduate Marko Mamić, who will present his fantasy novel “Zakletva povratka” (The Oath of Return).

In addition to the presentation of a new collection of short stories published for the sixth year on the occasion of FantaSTikon, and the always attractive cosplay competition with award-winning cosplayers ND Cosplay and Bendershield Cosplay as judges, we offer a rich selection of board games for free play, quiz competitions (GTQ returns with a vengeance!), workshops, and a mysterious auction.
