Dražen Pejković and Tončica Jelača Marijančević Tonka's "Black and White in Color" will take place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Studio-21- gallery.

The exhibition curator is Dora Derado Giljanović:

(...) "These are two sculptural manuscripts colliding and creating new life and interpretation. Without their opposition, there would be no new life.

Dražen Pejković's dramatic black sculptures stand out at three points in the gallery space. The central 'cosmic egg' embodies the Big Bang – dramatic and black. However, from it emerges rays of light, Tončica Jelača Marijančević's 'Big Pod,' which pierces it and spills out, spreading throughout the gallery. Its soft, cottony interior is the nest of life. This light originated from the Big Bang and is the reason for the birth of countless stars and the seeds of future life. This indicates that even in the midst of cosmic darkness, light will find a way to break through."


About the artists:

DRAŽEN PEJKOVIĆ was born on February 14, 1968, and lives and works in Split. He studied architecture at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, where he graduated in 1994. He is involved in urban planning and architecture, working in the urban planning department of the City of Split and IGH on project management.

His creative exploration began in 1986 during high school under the mentorship of lawyer and art collector Dalibor Parać and architect Neven Šegvić. During his studies under the mentorship of Josip Vaništa and sculptor Andrija Krstulović, he continued artistic research and held his first solo exhibition in 1989 in Split.

He participated in the Zagreb Youth Salon (HDLU Zagreb) in 1997 with the work 'Noah's Ark – a ship project' and in 2011, he participated in the 6th International MIKK Photography Competition on the theme: Digital Abstraction, Murska Sobota – Slovenia, with the work 'VIRUSES,' which was included in the exhibition selection and catalog. From 2013 to the present, he has collaborated with the Croatian carpet factory Regeneracija – Zabok as part of the project 'SELF-PORTRAITS,' resulting in the creation of five designed carpets and a group exhibition titled 'ART AND DESIGN IN WOOL' held in 2015 in the Old City Hall in Split.

In 2015, he collaborated with choreographer Dinko Bogdanić and musical artist Joško Koludrović on the ballet work 'PIXELS,' which premiered at the Split National Theater as part of World Dance Day.


TONČICA JELAČA MARIJANČEVIĆ was born in 1965 in Selca on the island of Brač, into a traditional stonecutting family, where she developed sensitivity to form. She attended the School of Applied Arts in Split and enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo in 1983, majoring in sculpture under the guidance of Professor Alija Kučukalić, completing her studies in 1987. She studied pedagogical subjects in 2000 and worked as a professor of modeling, drawing, and painting at a high school in Split on a temporary basis.

She creates sculptures, mainly ambient installations in laminated cotton, rice paper, and other materials (wood, metal, wire, terracotta, etc.), accompanied by light and sound elements, which she executes herself. She is involved in making ceramics using the raku technique and underwater photography. She has exhibited in 19 solo exhibitions and several group exhibitions.
