Alexander Hülshoff, cello & Andreas Frölich, piano

The collaboration between the two renowned musicians, cellist Alexander Hülshoff and pianist Andreas Frölich, has been ongoing for several years. Their program includes the most demanding and beautiful works from the repertoire for cello and piano duo, spanning from the Baroque and Classical periods to the 20th century. In the Split recital, they will unite in the performance of three sonatas for cello and piano – outstanding compositions for this ensemble and the only ones in the opuses of Debussy, Schubert, and Shostakovich. Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano is the first of six sonatas for various instruments with piano and represents Debussy's late style, where the composer pays homage to the tradition of the French sonata. Schubert's famous Sonata in A minor, D. 821, known as Arpeggione, was originally composed not for the cello but for the arpeggione – a guitar-like instrument with a bow and keyboard, invented just a year before Schubert wrote this sonata in 1824. The arpeggione quickly fell out of fashion, and the sonata is now best known in its arrangement for cello and piano. Dmitri Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello in D minor, Op. 40, is a relatively conservative work through which the composer sought to calm tensions after increasing criticisms from the political leadership of Stalin's Russia against his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Despite its simplicity, the work is filled with hints of irony. Given that it was created during Shostakovich's brief extramarital affair, many attribute a romantic background to the sonata. Argentine cellist and composer José Bragato was the longtime principal cellist of Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and a cellist in numerous ensembles led by Ástor Piazzolla. In the style of Nuevo tango, he composed popular pieces such as Graciela y Buenos Aires and Milontan for cello and piano.
