Kemal Gekić, piano - Split Circle
Kemal Gekić (Split, 1962) is a pianist of international renown, known for his refined interpretations of music by Handel, Mozart, Chopin, Scriabin, Liszt, and numerous other composers. His journey from his native Split, through Zagreb and Novi Sad, led him to the United States. In 1999, alongside his active piano career, he became a professor at the International University in Florida and the Music Academy in Tokyo. His aunt, Professor Lorenza Batturina, provided him with his initial musical knowledge, and in 1978, under the guidance of Professor Jokuton Mihajlović, he began his studies at the Art Academy in Novi Sad. As one of the best students in the history of that institution, he continued to work at the faculty in the Piano Department, which he led until 1999. Controversies surrounding Gekić began at the 11th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1985 and continued into the following decades. His distinctive and spectacular playing sparked divided opinions among conservative jury members but won the hearts of audiences and critics alike. Simultaneously, he began performing throughout Europe, the Middle East, Canada, the USSR, Japan, Southeast Asia, and his performances were broadcasted by several leading television networks.
