EXHIBITION: AVARS AND SLAVS SOUTH OF THE DRAVA RIVER
Location: Archaeological Museum in Split (Zrinsko-Frankopanska 25, 21000 Split)
Opening: Friday, January 27, 2023
Duration: January 27 - May 31, 2023
The exhibition presents archaeological material which provides insights into the social structure, daily life, customs, and material culture of the Avar and Slavic populations (from the 6th to the 9th century).
The authors, based on the analysis of the material legacy, settlement forms, funeral customs, and costumes, presented the functioning of the Avar government and society, reconstructed the origin and ethnogenesis of the Slavs, and explained how the formation of a people that is better known by historical sources only since the 6th century took place.
The mentioned period will be presented through specially selected examples of jewelry, warrior equipment, agricultural tools, ceramic vessels, bone objects, and illustrations of Avar and Slavic society members. The presented material heritage highlights the importance of Croatian archaeological heritage within the European cultural circle.
