EXHIBITION "THE VISIBLE ONES"
Location: Gallery of Fine Arts
Time: February 22 - March 30, 2024.
The interinstitutional project and exhibition "The visible ones" was created in collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka, the Art Gallery Dubrovnik, the Museum of Fine Arts Osijek, and the Gallery of Fine Arts in Split.
After its premiere at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, the "Visible" exhibition is presented at the Gallery of Fine Arts in Split, opening on February 22, 2024, at 7:00 PM.
The project is a result of research into the representation of female artists in the art collections of museum institutions. It also represents certain aspects and mapping of contemporary artistic practices by female authors in Croatia. The project aims to raise awareness about the necessity for equal visibility and representation of female authors in museum collections and program realizations, which currently only account for 10-15%. The artistic production of female authors encompasses a wide range of themes and sensibilities and undeniably deserves greater visibility and attention from both the professional and broader public. Through thematic sections, the exhibition presents works from museum collections and the artistic production of authors who, through their artistic work, have achieved high positions in the art scene but are not necessarily represented in museum collections.
The focus of the research and exhibition is on female artists active during and after the 1990s (the so-called transitional generation), a time when changes in artistic paradigms were accompanied by shifts in ideologies, transitions, and socio-political upheavals. These societal changes significantly affected the visibility of authors who created works of high artistic quality, but circumstances such as war, geopolitical changes, and migrations somewhat marginalized their production, impacting museum acquisitions and their insufficient critical and theoretical visibility. Part of the research also includes the selection of artists active in the 1980s who were distant from dominant artistic narratives of that time. The project does not cover artists born in the last decade of the 20th century and younger, who, however, started and developed their artistic careers in a time that had become somewhat aware of earlier limitations. Nevertheless, there is a need to change existing paradigms, and therefore, through teamwork and collaboration with related institutions, this project seeks to strengthen awareness of the importance of equality, equal opportunities, and the promotion of female artists' production in the field of visual arts.
