Exhibition by Zoe Šarlija: "City Reading"

Location: Photo Club Split

Time: January 10 - February 1, 2024

On Wednesday, January 10, at 7 p.m., the exhibition program of the Photo Gallery of the Photo Club Split for 2024 opens with the exhibition "City Reading" by the young Croatian author Zoe Šarlija. She began working on this cycle at the Design Studio at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, which resulted in her graduation project in the form of a book containing about a hundred photographs taken during 2020 and 2021. Through the photo series titled "City Reading," Šarlija analyzes the increasingly evident tendency of commodification of public space, where text and image (advertisements, billboards, ads) seemingly innocently 'exhibited' in public urban spaces are presented as completely transparent and unambiguous, while they are actually carriers of numerous hidden messages, intentions, and ideologies.

Zoe Šarlija was born in 1996 in Zagreb. In June 2021, she graduated from the Design Studio, specializing in Visual Communication at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb. In addition to her design work, she began to intensively engage in photography from 2017 onwards. She has photographed for music portals, various musicians, and bands, having covered over 150 concerts to date. From 2019, she worked for four years as a freelance photojournalist for the Pixsell agency, and at the beginning of 2023, she opened her own design-photography studio and works as a freelancer. She participated in and exhibited at the photo competition "Culture in Focus," and her photograph was the winning entry in the category of "Theater, Film, and Dance Arts" in 2019/20. In September 2022, she opened her first solo exhibition titled "City Reading" at Lauba in Zagreb.
