A collaboration between artificial intelligence and the artist's handiwork

Written by: Dora Derado Giljanović

We live in the time of software that can, according to the user's instructions, create an image themselves (Open AI software DALL-E, DALL-E 2, but also Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, etc.) or write a text of any nature (among others highlights Chat GPT).

The exhibition "Matošić_graphics... / Digital civility" by multimedia artist Jakša Matošić is a comment on what has been happening in the world of artificial intelligence lately, but also on what has occupied this artist since 2011.

At this exhibition, artist Matošić presents a series of digital graphics created using a computer algorithm and three multimedia works. The artist starts with a photograph (someone else's or some of his own work). In the author's process called "Surprise me", which he has been using since 2011, the artist alternately uses an algorithm and his intuition. Matošić modifies the template to get digital graphics. The result is a combination of artificial intelligence and a personal note given by the artist, which AI alone cannot give and, ultimately, surprises even the artist himself.

In addition, one of the forewords of the exhibition, along with the one by curator Dora Derado Giljanović, is also written by Chat GPT. Matošić simultaneously conducts an interview with artificial intelligence and a living person to emphasize their difference in the interpretation of his works and (digital) art in general.
