Exhibition D’Annunzio’s Martyr of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka

The exhibition brings an interpretation of D’Annunzio from the humanistic position of contemporary anti-fascism on which modern Europe is built. The controversial Italian military leader and forerunner of fascist ideology, Gabriele D’Annunzio, occupied Rijeka with paramilitary forces on September 12, 1919, declaring it a voluntary part of the Kingdom of Italy. The arrival and stay of D'Annunzio in Rijeka took place at the invitation of irredentists, who advocated the right to declare Rijeka Italian. It soon became clear how destructive this was for the cultural and economic stability of Rijeka at the time.

The exhibition D’Annunzio’s Martyr brings a specific look at D’Annunzio’s stay in Rijeka from the perspective of women who lived in Rijeka at the time, those who came to Rijeka from Italy with or after D'Annunzio and those who were his mistresses. D'Annunzio's exhibition shows through the eyes of native Rijeka women such as Zora Blažić and Nicoline Fabris and those who came to Rijeka precisely because of D'Annunzio, as did pianist Luisa Baccara, but also many Italian women - volunteers, sisters, mothers, daughters and wives legionnaire.

The exhibition remains open until June 13, 2022.
