Circus Night in Split

Circus Night in Split

 Location: Youth Center Split

Date: November 17 - 19, 2023

Circus Night in Split - A three-day celebration of this popular and demanding art form

This year's Split edition of Circus Night on November 17th, 18th, and 19th is organized by the Circus Collective – an association for contemporary circus and related artistic practices. However, it is actually an international event organized by Territoires de Cirque. Circus Night (La Nuit du Cirque) is a unifying and festive moment that takes place every autumn to showcase the vitality and diversity of this popular and demanding art form. The event is dedicated to promoting the social and ecological commitment of contemporary circus, as well as its intercultural and intergenerational dimensions.

Over the course of three days of Circus Night in Split, we will enjoy a performance by Italian circus artist Davide Perissutti, a screening of the film "Queen's Influence," and learn from Davide Perissutti in his physical theater workshop.

The film "Queen's Influence" (Hiko - vanishing culture in Tonga, 2022) is a documentary about the vanishing culture of Polynesian women jugglers in the Kingdom of Tonga. Through their personal stories, the women share the history and cultural impact of Queen Salote on this traditional dance (skill) and the empowerment of women on this remote island. The film, directed by Paprika Leaverton, is in English, and admission to the screening is free.

The performance "The Overcoats" by Italian circus and theater artist Davide Perissutti is a tragic comedy based on the eponymous novel by Russian writer Gogol. The artistic exploration begins within the pages of the Russian novel, resulting in a play dedicated to bureaucracy. Its intention is to convey how the common man feels in the face of insurmountable effort and to understand why human beings must continue accumulating so many laws that they ultimately become paralyzed. This progressive and tragic paralysis transforms into a comedy, a "theater of the absurd" spectacle. Admission to the performance is free.

The physical theater workshop with Davide Perissutti, titled "Build Your Stupidity," will offer different approaches to discovering what makes you funny, ugly, and foolish. The workshop aims to provide participants with a perspective on how stupidity helps create a safe environment and assists in the creation of a circus or theater performance. The workshop is intended for youth and adults (13+) interested in physical theater regardless of previous experience. Workshop registration is done through an online form (https://shorturl.at/astRZ).
