The exhibition "Drawings and Carvings" - Selection from the Graphic Collection of the University Library in Split

In celebration of its 120th anniversary, the University Library in Split will open the exhibition "Drawings and Carvings: Selection from the Graphic Collection of the University Library in Split" on October 10th, 2023, at 7:00 PM. The exhibition will be held in the Department of Special Collections of the Library and in the University Gallery.

The exhibition serves as a tribute to all the artists and guardians of cultural heritage who have contributed to the establishment, enrichment, and preservation of the Graphic Collection over the past twelve decades. It features a total of 180 works ranging from the 17th century to the present, diverse in content and technique, including drawings, prints, graphic art, graphic-poetry portfolios, artistic postcards, and photographs.

In addition to documents from the Library's archives about the early development of the collection, the exhibition also showcases the oldest reference materials - catalogs and exhibition invitations, such as Emanuel Vidović's exhibition catalog from 1903, Salon Galić catalogs from 1926, HDLU Split, and others. The exhibition also highlights the interest of the Split artistic circle from the 1920s to 1945, with artists like Anđelo Uvodić and Maestro Ivo Tijardović dedicating their graphic portfolios to the Library.

The University Gallery displays artworks received as gifts from artists and friends of the Library from 1956 to the present day, as well as mandatory copies from the National and University Library in Zagreb. The collection includes posters of visual and documentary value created towards the end of World War II and up to the present day.

Thanks to the suitable working conditions and storage facilities provided when the University Library moved to its purpose-built facility in 2009, the consolidation, conservation, and restoration of the Graphic Collection were made possible. Subsequently, the material underwent processing and digitization in specialized offices and workshops, allowing it to be presented to the public.

The enrichment of the collection with numerous artworks in recent years is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the Library and the University Gallery, led by Helena Trze Jakelić. She has, in agreement with the artists, donated some of the works that were previously exhibited in the Gallery to the Library.

The exhibition's setup involved the Department of Special Collections (Mihaela Kovačić, Abra Papić) and the Department for the Protection and Digitization of Materials (Ana Radić Bizjak, Dora Ljubica, Branko Bralić). The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog currently in preparation.
