SEA CHESTS OF DALMATIAN NOVIGRAD

Author: Jadran Anzulović

Opening: May 26 (Friday), 2023, at noon

The exhibition will present sixteen maritime (sailor's) chests from Novigrad in northern Dalmatia that are kept in the fund of the Ethnographic Collection and were collected and expertly valorized by Jadran Anzulović. The aim of the exhibition is to show the unexhibited, so far unknown, and at the same time, the largest collected collection of sea chests on the eastern Adriatic coast. Of the sixteen collected sea chests, fifteen belonged to the Austrian or Austro-Hungarian navy, and they were created from the middle of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. One chest (baul) from the beginning of the 30s of the 20th century belonged to the navy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Photo portraits of sailors from Novigrad who served in the Austro-Hungarian navy and the navy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia with a description of their service will also be presented at the exhibition, as well as several preserved items from the sailor's chest (lanterns, notebooks, etc.).

The exhibition will remain open until July 25, 2023.
