EXHIBITION: EPISTLE

EXHIBITION: EPISTLE

Location: Salon Galić Gallery (Marmontova 3, 21000 Split)

In numerous interviews about the exhibition Epistle, Denis Butorac emphasizes the importance of his childhood and growing up conditions for artistic work. In these conversations, like leitmotifs, the notions of religion, patriarchal family and father, small community, and the Homeland War are repeated within the framework in which he failed to recognize himself. In his artistic work, he uses photography as a medium in which he often explores topics such as identity, family, and tradition, thus building his narrative series in which he combines a documentary and conceptual work.

In the second, performative part of the exhibition, the term epistle from the title implies the sender and the recipient under the assumption of a common language. It is determined by the socio-cultural context. The author's insistence on religious symbolism is more than obvious: from the production itself with massive heavy frames such as altarpieces to photographs with a motif of (male) tears, earrings with a cross, tattoos markedly positioned at the site of Christ's chest wound.
