Claudio Monteverdi is the greatest musical innovator at the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, the composer of the first operas that have been preserved to this day and are still part of the repertoire. He is a genius of musical expression who, in his distinctive musical language full of vigor, rhythm, and lightness, succeeded in achieving emotional depth, nuanced expression, and mood. With equal ease, he composed secular madrigals, opera, and sacred music, bringing a touch of secularism and vitality to church music.
Vespro della Beata Vergine is a magnificent work by Claudio Monteverdi, a kind of compendium of all types of modern music at that time: a work of splendid diversity, from grand settings of psalms in the Venetian manner, virtuoso music for solo voices, instrumental concertante passages that served as interludes during the service, and Monteverdi did not hesitate even to attempt to achieve expressiveness and emotional value similar to opera in the magnificent Magnificat.
The Croatian Radiotelevision Choir performs with the instrumental ensemble Concerto dei venti, under the direction of chief conductor Tomislav Fačini.
