Tips: How to Get Rid of Trash in Split?

There is a confession to be made; Split and most of Croatia are far from being perfect in garbage collecting. Locals are dealing with that as they can, but all those in touch with tourists at least once heard a million dollar question; where and how to take separately collected glass, paper, plastic, etc. I must say that during this season several visitors asked me how to separate trash, and where to take it. Unfortunately, in most cases it comes to simple and not very progressive rule: "fill up a bag and dump it in a container". Explaining why is it so would mean sailing into political waters. That's why I will try just to give you a few tips about something so simple: garbage disposal.

For general garbage everything is clear. When you fill up your bag take it to the closest container and toss it there. These containers are really everywhere, wherever it's possible for city's garbage company's trucks to reach it. Sometimes there is a problem in the city's historical centre. It's a pedestrian zone, and only small vehicles are able to go there to empty green cans.

The easiest recycling trash is plastic and glass bottles, and drinks' cans. It's the best to collect them in separate bags, and then take it to some bigger supermarket where they will buy them out for half Kuna a piece. That doesn't include beer glass bottles, those containing oil or detergents, and bottles for milk and other dairy products. Also, only bottle containing drink produced in Croatia can be sold. The simplest way to find out which bottle is suitable for this way of recycling is to find a note on a label saying "povratna naknada 0,50 kn". If you don't feel like waiting in line to sell few bottles, or you just don't care for those few kunas you will get, give it to people who are collecting them around town. Other way is just to leave your bag next to the container, someone will pick it up in no time.

Besides that, it's possible to collect separately paper, plastic and glass. To do that, you will need to find containers in different colours. For glass they are dark green, for paper are blue, and for plastics those containers are yellow. There should be a location with them in every neighbourhood.

We told you, system is far from being perfect.
