The uniqueness of the innovative projects, the technical ability of the musicians, and the strong personality of the artistic director Fahmi Alqhai have made the Spanish ensemble Accademia del Piacere one of the leading European ensembles in the field of early music. Fahmi Alqhai (viola da gamba and artistic direction) and flamenco singer Rocío Márquez explore the musical influences of three cultures on the Iberian Peninsula: Sephardic, Moorish, and Christian. In the interaction of the old and the new, the program delves into the deep roots of flamenco as the most distinctive phenomenon of Spanish folklore that spread from Andalusia to South America and returned to Andalusia, permeated with new influences. The program revitalizes some of the old songs handed down by oral tradition or written down in the manuscripts of ancient ancestors.
