The artist Marija Ančić explores the state of shame (being in a state of shame and the state of shame). She came up with the idea to make a series of load-bearing objects/sculptures from composite materials inspired by medieval torture and disgrace devices. Her idea is to oppose an internet culture that is highly visual, seemingly superficial, fast, and easily digestible to the medieval mode of public humiliation with the goal of punishing, silencing, and intimidating. Until the advent of prisons in the 18th century, every violation of the law and regulations was punished by public humiliation, every city had a pillar of shame, logs, and similar devices, and the public participated in the punishment by verbal and physical violence. In today’s culture, shame has found new life on the internet and social media.
